Regional and COS MARINE Events
The Center for the Blue Economy is located just a few blocks from the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. The Monterey Bay is a nexus of marine research and policy studies on the North American continent. Marine science and education facilities focused on the waters of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary had a combined annual budget of over $250 million and employed over 2,100 people. (Griggs, Gary, Monterey Bay Crescent Ocean Research Consortium, 2009) The Middlebury Institute is a member of the Monterey Area Research Institutions’ Network for Education (MARINE) consortium led by the Center for Ocean Solutions (COS). The goal of COS MARINE is to enhance graduate marine education in the Monterey Bay area through a collaboration among the seven local academic institutions:
- MIIS Monterey
- CSU Monterey Bay
- Hopkins Marine Station
- Moss Landing Marine Laboratories
- Naval Postgraduate School
- Stanford University
- UC Santa Cruz
COS MARINE facilitates exchange among these institutions and provides an array of high quality inter-institutional activities such as courses, seminars, and workshops that are free of charge to eligible students. Throughout the academic year (and often during the summer) students from all seven campuses have opportunities to apply their training to pressing ocean issues and engage in real world problem-solving.
